Walt Disney’s involvement in the Monsanto House of the Future was a fascinating chapter in Disneyland’s history, blending his vision for innovation with corporate sponsorship and futuristic design.
Origins and Walt Disney’s Role
The concept for the Monsanto House of the Future originated from Ralph Hansen, head of Monsanto’s Plastics Division Market Development Department. Hansen saw it as an opportunity to showcase Monsanto’s cutting-edge plastics and construction materials. In 1953, Monsanto initiated a plastics-in-building research project at MIT’s School of Architecture, led by faculty members Marvin Goody and Dick Hamilton. This collaboration laid the groundwork for the future attraction.
Walt Disney became involved in January 1956 when Disney and Monsanto agreed to bring the House of the Future to Disneyland. Walt’s interest in the project stemmed from his passion for innovation and his desire to showcase futuristic concepts in Tomorrowland. He saw the House of the Future as a perfect fit for his vision of presenting cutting-edge ideas to the public.
Development and Design
Walt assigned Imagineer John Hench to oversee the project for Disney. Hench was tasked with selecting the site at the entrance to Tomorrowland and ensuring that the house met two key requirements:
- All utilities had to be located in a concrete room serving as the foundation and main support.
- The house needed a water source for its cooling system.
The final design featured four symmetric wings cantilevered off a central core, fabricated with glass-reinforced plastics. This unique structure posed challenges for placement, which Hench solved through creative landscaping, including the addition of a pond for the cooling system.
Interesting Stories and Features
- Futuristic Appliances: The house showcased several innovative features that have since become commonplace, such as the microwave oven. A built-in oven that rose from the countertop at the push of a button was an early version of the microwave.
- Adaptable Spaces: The children’s bedroom featured a movable partition that could transform the space from private sleeping quarters to a larger play area during the day.
- Overwhelming Popularity: The House of the Future was an instant hit. In just the first six weeks after opening, it saw over 435,000 visitors. By the time it closed, more than 20 million people had toured the attraction.
- Constant Evolution: The house underwent several remodels during its decade-long run, adapting to changing tastes and technologies.
Trivia and Legacy
- Indestructible Structure: When it came time to demolish the House of the Future in 1967, crews found it incredibly resilient. Wrecking balls, torches, chainsaws, and jackhammers failed to bring it down. Eventually, they resorted to using choker chains to crush it into smaller parts.
- Enduring Foundation: The reinforced concrete foundation of the house was never removed. It remains in its original location in Disneyland, now part of Pixie Hollow, painted green and used as a planter.
- Lasting Impact: The House of the Future significantly influenced later designs at Disney and Epcot. In 2008, Disney announced plans to bring back the concept with a more modern “Innoventions Dream Home”.
- Pop Culture Reference: The attraction served as inspiration for an episode of “The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse” titled “House of Tomorrow”.
The Monsanto House of the Future stands as a testament to Walt Disney’s forward-thinking vision and his ability to blend corporate partnerships with innovative attractions. While some of its predictions may seem quaint today, it undoubtedly played a role in shaping public perceptions of future living and showcased the potential of new materials and technologies.
Wishing you the best week,
Kelly
