Disneyland Resort News

This isn’t just any visit to the Disneyland Resort. The period between May 7 and May 21, 2025, is a remarkable confluence of magical milestones and energetic happenings. Guests will find themselves navigating the thrilling conclusion of “Season of the Force,” which wraps up on May 11, amidst the lively buzz of Grad Nites on May 9, 12, 18, and 21. It’s also the final opportunity for many to utilize a popular Southern California resident ticket offer, expiring May 15, all while the resort prepares for and then launches into the historic Disneyland’s 70th Anniversary Celebration, commencing with a flourish on May 16. This unique convergence creates a dynamic atmosphere, brimming with both exciting opportunities and distinct crowd patterns that require savvy navigation. Understanding these overlapping events is paramount; the palpable energy of celebration also brings a need for smart, informed choices.

The Ultimate Disneyland Foodie Itinerary: May’s Must-Eats & Hidden Sips (Focus: May 7-21, 2025)

The parks have been buzzing with new flavors leading into May. At Disneyland Park, Bengal Barbecue now offers the hearty Bengal Breakfast Bowl ($13.99), a satisfying mix of white rice, scrambled eggs, fried spiced ham, gravy, and chile oil, alongside a lighter Miso Caesar Salad ($11.29). Nearby, the Mint Julep Bar is a must-visit for its Pineapple-flavored Mickey-shaped Beignets (3-pack $6.49, 6-pack $10.49), which are generating considerable excitement for their warm, tart, and fluffy texture, perfectly complemented by the refreshing, non-alcoholic Passion Fruit Mint Julep ($6.49). Jolly Holiday Bakery Cafe sees the return of the much-loved Birria Toasted Sandwich ($15.49), a crunchy, juicy, and protein-packed delight served with consommé. Tiana’s Palace offers a complex and generously portioned Mufuletta Salad ($14.49), while Royal Street Veranda tempts with savory Baked Cheesy Biscuits ($8.99). For a sweet treat, the Matterhorn Puff ($6.79) at Edelweiss Snacks – filled with cheesecake, lemon curd, and fresh blueberries – has been described as “absolutely delicious”.

Over at Disney California Adventure, the Cappuccino Cart is serving the “top tier” Banoffee Pie Cold Brew ($7.75), a butterscotch cold brew with banana cold foam, especially appealing to those who enjoy a distinct (even artificial) banana flavor. Corn Dog Castle features the playful SoCal Corn Dog ($13.29), a hot dog ingeniously rolled in French fries. Cozy Cone 1 offers the Banana Cone-Nanza Churro ($6.99), though reviews on its banana cream have been mixed, with some finding it artificial. Aunt Cass Café is pouring a sweet, milkshake-like Strawberries & Cream Cold Brew ($7.29). For a shareable, savory option, the Pull-apart Pizza Bread ($10.75) can be found at various outdoor vending locations and is noted as being deceptively filling and tasty.

70th Anniversary Foodie Guide Highlights (Available from May 16):

The 70th Anniversary ushers in over 70 new culinary creations. While the full deluge arrives on May 16, a very special item makes an early debut: the Disneyland 70th Celebration Light Up Mickey Balloon Bucket. This coveted souvenir popcorn bucket launches on May 8th and can be found at select popcorn carts in both parks, The Coffee House at the Disneyland Hotel, and the Grand Californian Great Hall Cart. Price is estimated between $29.99-$36.99 based on similar items, though the official park price was not available.

From May 16th, look for nostalgic and innovative dishes like the W.E.D. Chili Cheese Baked Potato at Troubadour Tavern, the Fried Tamale Walking Taco from Rancho del Zocalo, the Hook’s Galley Tuna Melt at Red Rose Taverne, and Space Place Cottage Fries from Galactic Grill, all paying homage to Disneyland’s rich history. Other new items include a 70th Celebration Churro, a House-filled Celebration Beignet, a Mickey Hat Cookie, Ribeye Steak and Prawns at Blue Bayou, and Peach Cobbler Funnel Cake Fries at Hungry Bear Barbecue Jamboree.

Hidden Menu Items & Seasonal Specialties:

The “Season of the Force” event, concluding May 11th, offers a brief window to savor its unique Star Wars-themed culinary creations. The Fried Falumpaset Cheese Skewer at Ronto Roasters (a cheese corn dog with a potato crust and mustard-cheese sauce) has been highly praised. Other notable items include the Loaded Outpost Fries at Galactic Grill and the Dewback Chili Noodles at Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo. At Oga’s Cantina, the Oga’s Obsession, a non-alcoholic concoction with yogurt-filled popping spheres, has been surprisingly well-received.

For those seeking off-menu adventures at Disney California Adventure, the Lamplight Lounge is known among enthusiasts for its “secret menu” cocktails. While not officially published, bartenders are often familiar with requests for drinks like The Sea Witch (a fruity vodka mix), Neverland Tea (a tropical rum concoction), or the colorful Fun Wheel. Politely inquiring may unlock these unique libations.

Trending Dishes & Crowd Favorites:

Recent guest reviews consistently highlight several items. In Disneyland Park, Ronto Wraps (both meat and vegan versions) from Ronto Roasters remain exceptionally popular, often cited as one ofthe best food items in the resort. The Cheesy Garlic Pretzel Bread from Edelweiss Snacks or Maurice’s Treats is another fan favorite. The classic Fried Chicken at Plaza Inn continues to draw crowds with its generous portions and good value. Of course, the iconic Dole Whip Float from Tiki Juice Bar or The Tropical Hideaway is a perennial must-have.

In Disney California Adventure, Birria Tacos from Cocina Cucamonga (or the Birria Ramen in San Fransokyo Square) are a top pick. The Lobster Nachos at Lamplight Lounge are a signature shareable dish. For pure Instagrammability, treats like Dole Whip, Blue Milk from Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, Mickey Pretzels, and Mickey Beignets consistently top the charts.

Dining Optimization Tactics & Unexpected Hacks:

To make the most of the dining experience, Mobile Order is essential for most quick-service locations. Placing orders well in advance (an hour or more before peak meal times) via the Disneyland app is crucial to secure preferred pickup windows, as slots for popular spots fill quickly. For coveted table-service reservations like Blue Bayou or Lamplight Lounge, utilizing third-party alert services such as MouseDining can be beneficial, as cancellations do occur.

Consider creating your own “snack hack” meals by combining side items; for example, the Garlic Cheese Bread paired with Tomato Bisque Soup at select locations can make for a satisfying and more affordable option (inspired by a Disney World hack). Don’t forget that bringing personal food and non-alcoholic beverages (no glass containers) is permitted and can lead to significant savings. Reusable water bottles can be refilled at stations throughout the parks. While the query mentioned asking for a “chef’s special” at Café Orleans, there’s no specific widely known hack for this during May 2025. However, the new Braised Beef Short Rib ($32.00), available since April 30th, is a noteworthy addition to their menu.

Beyond the main attractions and well-trodden paths lie unique experiences that can elevate a Disneyland Resort visit from memorable to magical. These insider tips focus on uncovering those lesser-known photo opportunities, character interactions, freebies, and activities.

Lesser-Known Photo Opportunities:

For unique snapshots, venture beyond the castle. The Plushie Wall in the Emporium on Main Street, U.S.A., offers a colorful and whimsical backdrop, perfect for one or two people. The charming, often overlooked doors along Main Street, U.S.A. also provide distinct photo settings. In Disney California Adventure, the Radiator Springs Cactus Gardens in Cars Land present a serene and picturesque “happy place”. Back in Disneyland Park, the Sleeping Beauty Castle Walkthrough itself offers different, detailed perspectives often missed from the front, and the nearby Wishing Well is a classic, typically quieter spot. For a different vantage point, explore the under-utilized areas behind Ship to Shore and Harbor Galley in Frontierland, which offer views of the Sailing Ship Columbia and passing Tiana’s Bayou Adventure logs. Similarly, the backside of Flo’s V8 Cafe in Cars Land is usually quieter with fun views of Radiator Springs Racers. A piece of park history, Walt Disney’s original brick-testing wall, can be found next to the Main Street lockers. Keen eyes can also spot repurposed original Fantasyland ticket booths now serving as the Matterhorn chalet, the Storybook Land lighthouse, the Alice in Wonderland mushroom, and the Casey Jr. station.

Hidden Character Meet Locations & Unpublished Seasonal Offerings:

A significant new character dining experience begins May 18th at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa: Donald’s Tales of Adventure Dinner Buffet at Storytellers Cafe, featuring a new BBQ-based menu. Mickey and friends will continue to appear at breakfast and brunch. During the final days of “Season of the Force” (ending May 11), keep an eye out for Luke Skywalker, who has been reported wandering Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. While the separately ticketed Star Wars Nites (known for rare characters like Queen Amidala and Anakin Skywalker) conclude just before this period on May 6th, some enhanced Star Wars character presence might linger in Galaxy’s Edge.

In Disney California Adventure, Anna & Elsa’s Royal Welcome is scheduled to reopen on May 13th. Note that Meet Tinker Bell in Pixie Hollow at Disneyland Park remains closed indefinitely. For guests at the Disneyland Hotel, AAPI Month Entertainment offers live cultural performances on the Frontier Lawn on Fridays and Saturdays in May at 6 PM and 7 PM. The lineup includes Indian dance styles (May 9 & 10) and Polynesian entertainment (May 16 & 17).

Free Souvenirs and Other Hidden Gems:

Don’t forget to pick up complimentary Birthday or Celebration Buttons from City Hall in Disneyland Park or Guest Services in Disney California Adventure. Starting May 16, the “Key to Disneyland” interactive experience launches. While the key itself is a purchase (available at World of Disney and select park shops), it unlocks magical effects at nine lock stations across Disneyland Park—Main Street Fire Station, Adventureland Bazaar, New Orleans Square, Pooh Corner, near Rise of the Resistance, Frontierland’s Wilderness Expeditions Wagon, near Roger Rabbit’s Car Toon Spin, Fantasy Faire, and near Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters—and culminates in receiving one of nine commemorative trading pins at a finale station near the park entrance. This new activity encourages exploration and offers a collectible reward.

A classic freebie is the sourdough bread sample from the Boudin Bakery Tour in Disney California Adventure. Several complimentary activities are offered at the resort hotels: learn Ribbon Lei Making at The Sketch Pad Café in Pixar Place Hotel (Mondays, 1:00 PM in May), join a Washcloth Creations class at The Villas at Disneyland Hotel’s Discovery Den (Wednesdays, 9:30 AM), or attend a Learn to Draw session also at The Sketch Pad Café (Wednesdays, 1:30 PM & 2:30 PM). Cast Members often carry stickers for children, so it’s always worth a polite ask.

Lesser-Known Things to Do:

For a break from the hustle, step into the Main Street Cinema in Disneyland Park to watch classic Disney shorts in a cool, dark setting. Take a relaxing journey on the Mark Twain Riverboat or Sailing Ship Columbia, or enjoy a Grand Circle Tour on the Disneyland Railroad for unique views. At Disney California Adventure, the Animation Academy offers a fantastic free experience where guests learn to draw a Disney character, creating a personal souvenir. The Sorcerer’s Workshop, an interactive animation exhibit, reopens May 13th.

Resort hotel guests (or those visiting the hotels) can enjoy Movie Nights (Moana at Disneyland Hotel on Tuesdays, Turning Red at Pixar Place Hotel on Thursdays), and through May 11th, “Celebrate Season of the Force” piano music in the Grand Californian Great Hall daily at 4:00 PM and 7:30 PM. For a playful diversion, Pixar Putt at Pixar Place Hotel offers Pixar-themed miniature golf daily from 10:00 AM to 8:30 PM until June 1, 2025. Magic Key holders receive a discounted price of $25. Some special resort activities, like Sunrise Yoga at the Grand Californian (May 10 and May 24), are available for booking and offer a unique start to the day.

EXCLUSIVE SAVINGS: Maximizing Magic, Minimizing Spend (Current for May 7-21, 2025)

Navigating the various discounts and offers available can significantly enhance the value of a Disneyland Resort visit. For travel between May 7 and May 21, 2025, several key savings opportunities are active, particularly for multi-day tickets, hotel stays, Magic Key holders, and Disney Visa Cardmembers.

Active Ticket & Hotel Discounts:

A notable Disneyland Anniversary Ticket Offer begins May 16, allowing guests to purchase a 3-Day, 1-Park per day ticket for $360 ($120/day) or a 4-Day, 1-Park per day ticket for $400 ($100/day), valid through August 14, 2025. Park Hopper options and Lightning Lane Multi Pass can be added for additional fees. This is a significant deal for those whose visits align with the 70th Anniversary kickoff.

For hotel stays, an offer to Save Up to 20% on Select Rooms on Sunday through Thursday nights is active until May 15 (book by May 12). This applies to Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa (up to 20%), Disneyland Hotel (up to 15%), and The Villas at Disneyland Hotel (up to 20%). Guests whose stays span May 15-16 should note this transition; new offers commence May 16 for the 70th Anniversary. These include an early booking offer to Save Up to 30% on Select Stays of 4 or More Nights (valid May 16 – Sep 26, book by May 15) and another to Save Up to 20% on Select Stays on Sunday through Thursday nights (valid May 16 – Aug 14, book by July 31). Eligible U.S. Military members also have access to great rates on rooms and specially priced tickets throughout 2025.

Magic Key Holder Specials:

Magic Key holders benefit from tiered discounts. For hotel stays, up to 25% off select rooms (Sun-Thu) is available through May 15 (book by May 12), followed by a similar offer of up to 25% off for stays from May 16 to August 14 (book by July 31). Food and merchandise discounts vary by tier: Inspire Key holders receive up to 15% off dining and up to 20% off merchandise, while Believe, Enchant, and Imagine Key holders get up to 10% off both. These apply at numerous participating locations like Cafe Orleans, Blue Bayou, Lamplight Lounge, Emporium, and World of Disney.

Exclusive culinary offerings for Magic Key holders include the Box’O Sliders Combo at Galactic Grill in Disneyland Park (3 beef sliders, fries, sauce for $23.99; upgrade to include a large soda and Magic Key Mirrored Mickey-Shaped Sipper for $29.99). The World of Color Dining Package at Magic Key Terrace in Disney California Adventure provides a 3-course prix fixe meal and reserved viewing for the new “World of Color: Happiness!” show (from May 16) for $69 per adult and $41 per child (ages 3-9), with a $10 upcharge for the beef short ribs. Magic Key holders also enjoy a special price of $25 for Pixar Putt at Pixar Place Hotel, which is open through June 1, 2025. A key date for Magic Key holders is May 9th, offering early access to purchase select 70th Anniversary Celebration merchandise.

Disney Visa Cardholder Perks:

Disney Visa Cardmembers can also access hotel savings on premium rooms (Sun-Thu): up to 30% off through May 15 (book by May 12), and up to 30% off for stays from May 16 to August 14 (book by July 31). A significant perk is access to exclusive Character Photo Opportunities with complimentary digital downloads. These include a Disney Character Experience in Disney California Adventure (near Stage 17 in Hollywood Land, daily 10:30 AM – 1:30 PM) and Star Wars/Heroic Encounter opportunities. Cardholders also receive 10% off select dining and merchandise at participating locations. New cardmembers may be eligible for a $200 Disney Gift Card eGift plus a $200 statement credit.

Mobile Order & Other Savings:

Mobile ordering via the Disneyland app primarily saves time by allowing guests to skip physical queues. While some exclusive novelty items like the Tauntaun Popcorn Bucket or the Magic Key Box’O Sliders can be secured through mobile order, the main benefit is convenience. Lesser-known ways to save include bringing your own snacks and water bottles (refillable at park stations), eating breakfast in your hotel room, sharing larger meal portions, and enjoying free park entertainment and hotel activities. Booking character meals on arrival or departure days can also be a strategic way to enjoy the experience without using park time or a park ticket day.

CROWD INDEX INTELLIGENCE & PARK NAVIGATION

The two-week period from May 7 to May 21, 2025, presents a particularly complex crowd dynamic at Disneyland Resort. Several factors converge: the tail end of the “Season of the Force” event, multiple Grad Nites at Disney California Adventure, the expiration of a popular Southern California resident ticket offer, and the highly anticipated launch of Disneyland’s 70th Anniversary Celebration.

14-Day Crowd Forecast & Optimal Dates:

Crowd levels are expected to fluctuate significantly. Early May, particularly May 7-8, might see moderate crowds (around 6-7/10) before picking up. The period from May 9-15 is anticipated to be busier, especially on weekends and as the SoCal ticket deal nears its May 15th expiration, likely pushing crowds to 7-8/10 with high attraction wait times.

The launch of the 70th Anniversary on May 16th will usher in a period of high excitement and, consequently, high congestion, particularly from May 16-19 (predicted 9/10 crowd levels). While daytime attraction wait times might surprisingly decrease as many locals focus on new entertainment, walkways will be very crowded, especially in the evenings. Grad Nites (May 9, 12, 18, 21) will see Disney California Adventure closing at 9:00 PM to regular day guests, shifting evening crowds towards Disneyland Park.

Optimal visiting dates for potentially lower (though still elevated) crowds within this window could be weekdays before May 9th (i.e., May 7-8) and weekdays between Grad Nites and the peak 70th launch (i.e., May 13-14). After the initial 70th Anniversary surge, May 20-21 might offer a slightly less congested experience for the new offerings compared to the kickoff weekend.

The best times of day to visit attractions will generally be the first two hours after park opening (especially with Early Entry) and the last two hours before closing, particularly on non-Grad Nite evenings for DCA or later in Disneyland Park after DCA’s early closure on Grad Nites. Midday (11 AM – 5 PM) will be the busiest. From May 16th onwards, evenings will be exceptionally congested due to new spectaculars.

Current Refurbishments & Closures (May 7-21):

Several attractions and dining locations will be undergoing refurbishment during this period.

  • Disneyland Park:Matterhorn Bobsleds: Closed for an extended period (reopening TBD, likely after Memorial Day). This removes a major E-ticket thrill ride. Alternatives include Space Mountain or Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.
  • “it’s a small world”: Closed through May 8, reopening May 9 with new Dante and Miguel (Coco) figures.
  • King Arthur Carrousel: Closed May 7-8, reopening May 9.
  • Mad Tea Party: Closed May 5-7, reopening May 8.
  • Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room: Closed (reopening TBD).
  • The Disneyland Story presenting Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln: Closed (Main Street Opera House reopens July 17 with “Walt Disney – A Magical Life”).
  • Chip ‘n’ Dale’s GADGETcoaster: Closes May 19 (reopens June 13).
  • Meet Tinker Bell in Pixie Hollow: Closed indefinitely.
  • Carnation Cafe: Closed through May 11.
  • Disney California Adventure Park:Anna & Elsa’s Royal Welcome: Closed until May 13.
  • Sorcerer’s Workshop: Closed until May 13.
  • Resort Hotels:Napa Rose (Grand Californian): Closed (reopening Fall 2025).
  • The E-Ticket Club at the Disneyland Hotel is closed for its transformation into the High Key Club (reopening Summer 2025).

The reopening of “it’s a small world” and Anna & Elsa’s Royal Welcome mid-window will likely draw crowds to these locations. The Matterhorn Bobsleds closure will put additional pressure on other thrill rides.

Time-Saving Strategies:

  • Lightning Lane (Genie+ Multi Pass & Individual Lightning Lane – ILL): The Disney Genie+ service (approx. $32-$39 per person/day) allows booking return times for Lightning Lane entrances at many attractions. The first selection can be made upon park entry, with subsequent selections available after using the current one or after a two-hour cool-down. For the highest-demand rides like Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance and Radiator Springs Racers, Individual Lightning Lane purchases (prices vary, $18-$35 per ride) are available. Strategically “stack” Lightning Lane selections for later in the day when standby lines peak, and frequently modify return times to find better slots. Recent adjustments to Lightning Lane ratios in April 2025 may mean slightly shorter standby waits and marginally longer Lightning Lane waits, generally favoring those in standby.
  • Virtual Queues (VQ): As of March 2025, World of Color – ONE at Disney California Adventure utilized a virtual queue, accessible via the Disneyland app once inside the park (or Disneyland Park with a Park Hopper ticket). This system will apply to the new “World of Color: Happiness!” show debuting May 16th. There is no current indication that Haunted Mansion is using a virtual queue.
  • Single Rider Lines (SRL): An excellent time-saver for individuals or groups willing to split up. Available at Disneyland Park for Space Mountain, Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run (and Matterhorn when open). In Disney California Adventure, find SRLs at Radiator Springs Racers (highly recommended), Incredicoaster, Goofy’s Sky School, Grizzly River Run, and WEB SLINGERS: A Spider-Man Adventure.
  • Rider Switch (Child Swap): For parties with young children who don’t meet height requirements. The entire group approaches a Cast Member; one adult rides while the other waits, then they switch, allowing the second adult to ride, often with a shorter wait and potentially bringing one guest along.
  • Rope Drop Strategy: Arrive at park entrances 30-60 minutes before official opening or Early Entry.
  • Disneyland – Fantasyland (for non-Early Entry guests): Peter Pan’s Flight will already have a line from Early Entry guests. Consider starting with Alice in Wonderland, Dumbo the Flying Elephant, or Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride to maximize rides in the first hour.
  • Disneyland – Tomorrowland (Space Mountain): A prime target during Early Entry.
  • DCA – Radiator Springs Racers: Not open during Early Entry. Many will rush here at official park opening. Consider this on a Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday if not using Early Entry, as EE will be at Disneyland Park on those days. SRL is a strong alternative.
  • Park Hopping Efficiency: The proximity of the two parks makes hopping convenient. On Grad Nites (May 9, 12, 18, 21), when DCA closes at 9:00 PM to day guests, a common strategy is to start in DCA and hop to Disneyland Park by mid-afternoon. Use the Disneyland app’s Tip Board to monitor wait times in both parks.
  • Early Entry (EE): A 30-minute head start for Disneyland Resort Hotel guests at a designated park each day. Disneyland Park offers EE on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, focusing on Fantasyland and Tomorrowland attractions like Peter Pan’s Flight and Space Mountain. Disney California Adventure hosts EE on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays, with access to rides like Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! and WEB SLINGERS: A Spider-Man Adventure. There are no official Extended Evening Hours for Disneyland Resort hotel guests in Anaheim mentioned for May 2025 beyond this standard Early Entry benefit.

EVENTS & SHOWS: Spotlight on May’s Must-See Spectacles

Paint the Night Parade (Disneyland Park – Returns May 16, 2025)

  • Review: “Paint the Night” is a fan-favorite, high-energy nighttime parade renowned for its dazzling array of over one million LED lights, innovative floats, vibrant costumed performers, and a host of popular Disney and Pixar characters. Its return is a highlight of the 70th Anniversary. The parade features state-of-the-art special effects and an infectious, upbeat soundtrack.
  • Why You Might Like It: For those who adore grand, visually stunning parades that blend classic Disney magic with modern technology, “Paint the Night” is an unmissable spectacle. It’s celebrated for creating a joyous, celebratory atmosphere that captivates guests of all ages.
  • Availability: Check the daily entertainment schedule upon arrival; typically runs once or twice per evening. Premium viewing spots fill up quickly.

Wondrous Journeys Fireworks (Disneyland Park – Returns May 16, 2025)

  • Review: Initially created for the Disney100 celebration, “Wondrous Journeys” is an awe-inspiring fireworks spectacular that pays tribute to the rich legacy of Walt Disney Animation Studios. It masterfully combines pyrotechnics with stunning projection mapping on Sleeping Beauty Castle, Main Street U.S.A., the facade of “it’s a small world,” and Rivers of America. The show journeys through moments and characters from all 60+ Walt Disney Animation Studios films, from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs to contemporary hits like Encanto and Wish. A unique highlight is Baymax from Big Hero 6 making a flying appearance over the castle.
  • Why You Might Like It: This is far more than a typical fireworks display; it’s an emotional and artistic homage to Disney animation. If you cherish Disney’s artistic heritage, enjoy breathtaking projections synchronized with a powerful score, and appreciate sophisticated storytelling through light and sound, “Wondrous Journeys” is exceptional.
  • Availability: Consult the daily schedule; usually one performance per night. Viewing from Main Street U.S.A. or near the castle offers the most complete experience.

World of Color: Happiness! (Disney California Adventure – Debuts May 16, 2025)

  • Review: “World of Color: Happiness!” is an all-new iteration of the iconic water spectacular at Paradise Bay, specially created for the Disneyland 70th Anniversary. While specific details of this new “Happiness!” version are still emerging, World of Color shows traditionally employ a breathtaking combination of nearly 1,200 programmable fountains, vibrant lighting, lasers, fire effects, and HD projections onto immense water screens. These elements are choreographed to iconic Disney and Pixar music, weaving together memorable scenes and characters. The previous “ONE” version celebrated themes of storytelling and courage; “Happiness!” is expected to evoke joy and celebration in line with the 70th Anniversary theme.
  • Why You Might Like It: If large-scale, technologically advanced spectaculars that immerse you in the magic of Disney and Pixar films appeal to you, World of Color is a signature Disney California Adventure experience. The debut of a brand-new show promises fresh visuals, new musical arrangements, and emotional storytelling.
  • Availability: Check the daily schedule, typically one or two performances per night. A virtual queue is required for access to the reserved viewing areas; alternatively, dining packages offer reserved viewing.

Through May 11th, as part of “Season of the Force,” guests in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland Park can experience “Fire of the Rising Moons.” This offers a unique vantage point for the park’s fireworks, synchronized with an exclusive musical score from John Williams’ Star Wars compositions, providing a themed alternative to Main Street viewing.

Debuting May 16th at the Disney Theater in Disney California Adventure is the all-new “Disney Jr. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Live!” This stage show, inspired by the popular Disney Jr. series, will feature original songs and interactive fun with Mickey, Minnie, and their pals, perfect for families with young children.

The May 16th entertainment relaunch is a massive draw and will significantly alter evening park dynamics. The simultaneous return and debut of these major nighttime spectaculars will lead to high demand for viewing spots and increased congestion on main thoroughfares in both parks.

CURRENT NEWS & HAPPENINGS (Relevant for May 7-21 Visit)

The Disneyland Resort is abuzz with activity, primarily centered around the momentous Disneyland’s 70th Anniversary Celebration, which officially kicks off on May 16, 2025. This resort-wide event, themed “Celebrate Happy”, will introduce new décor, a plethora of commemorative merchandise, dozens of new food and beverage items, and the grand return or debut of major entertainment spectaculars detailed above.

A key interactive component launching with the 70th Anniversary on May 16th is the “Key to Disneyland” experience. Guests can purchase a special key and embark on a park-wide adventure, visiting nine designated “lock stations” across Disneyland Park. Interacting with these stations unlocks magical effects on the key itself, and upon completing the journey by visiting all stations, guests receive one of nine collectible commemorative trading pins. This new offering blends a souvenir purchase with active park exploration.

Also debuting on May 16th is the all-new stage show, “Disney Jr. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Live!” at the Disney Theater in Disney California Adventure, promising engaging entertainment for younger guests and their families.

Magic Key holders have a special date to mark on their calendars: May 9, 2025, when they will have early access to purchase select merchandise from the 70th Anniversary Celebration Collection, while supplies last.

A new character dining experience, Donald’s Tales of Adventure Dinner Buffet, begins on May 18, 2025, at Storytellers Cafe in Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa. This will feature character appearances at dinner alongside a new BBQ-based menu.

While the event itself falls just after this period, the recent announcement (May 2nd) of the Savannah Bananas’ one-day visit to Disneyland Park on May 28, 2025, has generated considerable buzz. The popular exhibition baseball team will host a cavalcade and a dance moment, with banana-themed treats available.

Ongoing throughout May is the Pixar Putt experience at Pixar Place Hotel. This interactive 18-hole pop-up miniature golf course, themed to beloved Pixar films, is available until June 1, 2025. Additionally, the Disneyland Hotel hosts AAPI Month Entertainment with live cultural performances on its Frontier Lawn on Fridays and Saturdays in May.

Finally, guests visiting early in the window have their last chance to experience “Season of the Force,” which concludes on May 11, 2025. This includes themed food and beverages, the Hyperspace Mountain overlay for Space Mountain, special character encounters such as Luke Skywalker in Galaxy’s Edge, and the “Fire of the Rising Moons” fireworks viewing experience. The news cycle is heavily dominated by the 70th Anniversary, indicating a significant shift in park atmosphere and offerings from May 16th onwards.

Disney World Resort News

Walt Disney World in mid-May 2025 presents a captivating tableau. The EPCOT International Flower & Garden Festival is at its zenith, painting the park in vibrant hues and offering a cornucopia of culinary delights that tantalize both the eyes and the palate. The Florida air, warm with the promise of summer, still carries a gentler touch than the peak heat to come, and importantly, the full force of summer crowds has yet to descend, particularly during the earlier stretch of your May 7th to May 21st, 2025, visit. This period carves out a “sweet spot” – an atmosphere alive with festival fervor yet potentially more navigable than the bustling peak seasons. This guide is tailored specifically for your travel window, aiming to unlock the most enchanting and efficient experiences.

The general crowd outlook for these two weeks is a transition from the lighter post-spring break numbers towards the anticipatory buzz of the pre-Memorial Day period. The ongoing Flower & Garden Festival is a significant draw, especially on weekends, infusing EPCOT with a lively energy. Specific events such as The D2 Summit (a major cheerleading and dance competition) from May 9th to 11th and the Special Olympics Florida Summer Games on May 16th and 17th may create localized pockets of increased activity. These events tend to boost occupancy at Value resorts like the All-Stars and Coronado Springs, and you might notice more groups in the parks on these days, though they typically don’t overwhelm overall park capacity. It’s worth noting that Universal Orlando’s highly anticipated Epic Universe theme park is slated to open on May 22nd. While the primary impact of this opening on Walt Disney World crowds will likely be felt after your travel window, its imminent debut creates a significant buzz in the Orlando area and could subtly influence guest distribution towards the very end of your stay, perhaps even making the earlier part of your Disney visit slightly less congested as some anticipation shifts.

This unique confluence of a major festival with generally moderate crowds, especially in the first half of your visit, presents a prime opportunity. You can immerse yourself in the festival’s unique offerings without contending with the absolute peak congestion seen during major holiday periods.

The Royal Repast: A Fortnight of Feasting Across the Kingdom

Embark on a culinary journey through Walt Disney World, where new discoveries, hidden gems, and trending tastes await your discerning palate between May 7th and May 21st, 2025. This is where the magic of Disney meets the art of gastronomy, offering an ever-evolving menu of delights.

A Taste of Tomorrow, Today: Brand New & Noteworthy Bites

The culinary landscape at Walt Disney World is always in motion, and early May 2025 brings fresh excitement, particularly from the EPCOT International Flower & Garden Festival. A key operational update for your visit: CommuniCore Hall at EPCOT is scheduled to close on May 12th for its transformation into a new Goofy-hosted interactive play space, part of the “Cool Kid Summer” initiative set to launch later in the month. This directly impacts the Farmers Feast booth, whose new Summer Solstice menu items will relocate to the Florida Fresh booth (found near the main walkway to World Showcase, close to Disney Traders) starting May 12th.

Here are the standout new dishes from this menu, available throughout your May visit:

Item NamePark/Location (Booth)PriceDescriptionAvailability
Peach CobblerEPCOT / Farmers Feast (until May 11), Florida Fresh (from May 12)$4.75Warm peach cobbler served with cinnamon gelato and streusel topping; praised for balanced sweetness.May 2025, Flower & Garden
Grilled Beef Strip LoinEPCOT / Farmers Feast (until May 11), Florida Fresh (from May 12)$8.50Served with tomato risotto (Ben’s Original™ Arborio Rice), tomato-beurre blanc, and basil pesto; tender steak.May 2025, Flower & Garden
Heirloom Tomatoes & Fresh MozzarellaEPCOT / Farmers Feast (until May 11), Florida Fresh (from May 12)$5.00Ripe heirloom tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, popping pearls of balsamic vinaigrette; bright and acidic.May 2025, Flower & Garden

Being aware of the Farmers Feast booth’s relocation is crucial for finding these new offerings, especially if your visit spans past May 11th. This change also offers a glimpse into the dynamic nature of the parks, with new experiences like the “Cool Kid Summer” enhancements continually reshaping guest experiences.

The Force is Strong with These Flavors: Star Wars May the 4th Specials

While “May the 4th” itself will have just passed as your trip begins, the culinary celebration of the Star Wars saga extends its reach, with most themed treats available through May 31st, 2025, offering a delightful opportunity to indulge your galactic appetite.

Disney’s Hollywood Studios becomes a hub for these intergalactic goodies:

  • At Backlot Express:

  • Lightsaber Churro: Served with chocolate sauce. Found at various carts including Anaheim Produce, Market, and the Grand Avenue cart earlier in May, and consistently at the Churro Cart near Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway through May 31st. Price is typically around $6.50-$7.00.
  • At Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo:
  • Mythrol Orb: A crystal blue raspberry orb with tart pineapple-passion fruit sauce and crunchy streusel. Price: $6.49.
  • Sliced Eopie Wrap: Roasted pork loin, capicola ham, spiced broccoli rabe, provolone, and red pepper mulsauce in pita bread, served with yuca fries. Price: $15.99. The yuca fries here have received particular praise for being crispy and fluffy.
  • At the Milk Stand:
  • Kessel Run Rations: Flaky pretzel croissants sprinkled with smoked sea salt and served with a caramel-chocolate sauce. Price: $5.99. Reviewers found these surprisingly good, even if served cold, with the sea salt and sauce pairing well.
  • From the Cart near Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance and the Cart near Milk Stand:
  • Mossberry Biscuit: A biscuit topped with ube and matcha icing, ube micro sponge cake, sprinkles, and dehydrated blueberries. Price: $6.00 (some sources note $5.49). While visually appealing, some found it dry with muted flavors.
  • At Oga’s Cantina (reservations highly recommended):
  • The Mythosaur (Drink & Mug): A potent concoction of Minute Maid Passion Fruit Orange Guava Juice, lime juice, Appleton Estate 8 Year Reserve Rum, Goslings Black Seal Rum, and Blue Curaçao, served in a collectible Mythosaur Mug. Price: $47.00. The mug itself is a detailed ceramic piece, and the drink is described as rum-forward and refreshing, akin to a Trader Sam’s tiki drink.

Disney Springs also joins the galactic celebration, primarily at its high-end patisseries, available May 1st through May 31st:

  • Amorette’s Patisserie:
  • Choose Your Side Petit Cake: Layers of vanilla and chocolate chiffon, cookies and cream mousse, and white and dark chocolate crispy pearls. This visually striking cake is priced at $22.00.
  • The Ganachery:
  • Anakin’s Starfighter Chocolate Piñata: A dark chocolate shell filled with crunchy hazelnut “asteroid” ganache clusters. General piñatas are $28.00.
  • Ahsoka Ganache Pop: A plant-based coconut and blueberry swirled ganache pop covered in 65% dark chocolate. Price: $7.50. Available through September 31st.
  • Star Planets Ganache Bars: A set of ganache bars inspired by Star Wars planets, featuring unique flavor profiles: spicy cherry for Mustafar, ginger-sea buckthorn for Coruscant, yuzu-shiso for Endor, and salted ruby for Crait. Price: $18.00.

The extended availability of these Star Wars themed items is a boon for visitors throughout May. The souvenir sippers and popcorn buckets, such as the Light-Up Death Star Popcorn Bucket ($32.89) and the Salvaged Clone Trooper Helmet Bucket, are particularly popular and can draw long lines, quickly becoming sought-after collectibles. Setting expectations for potential waits for these merchandise items is wise. The premium pricing on some of the patisserie items positions them as special occasion indulgences.

Unearthing Hidden Flavors & Enduring Seasonal Delights

Beyond the newest releases and Star Wars specials, a treasure trove of flavors awaits, from enduring festival favorites to clever snack hacks.

EPCOT International Flower & Garden Festival – Beyond the Newest:

The festival, running through June 2nd, offers many returning champions alongside its new blooms. Consider these highly-rated staples:

  • S’mores Bar from Beach Grub (located on the walkway between World Showcase and the Imagination! Pavilion): A rich fudge brownie base with dark chocolate, perfectly toasted meringue, and a hint of smoked graham cracker. This treat, priced at $5.50, consistently earns praise for evoking campfire nostalgia with its indulgent flavors.
  • Beef Tenderloin Tips at Northern Bloom (Canada Pavilion): Tender beef tips served with a savory mushroom bordelaise sauce, creamy whipped potatoes, and garden vegetables. At $7.75, it’s a hearty and satisfying option often lauded for its quality.
  • Frushi from Hanami (Japan Pavilion): A unique and refreshing offering of strawberry, pineapple, and honeydew wrapped in coconut rice and a tri-color soy wrap, served with a delightful coconut cream sauce. Priced at $6.50, it’s as beautiful as it is tasty, making it a festival icon.
  • Warm Cheese Strudel with Berry Compote at Bauernmarkt (Germany Pavilion): A comforting classic, this warm strudel filled with cheese and topped with a sweet berry compote costs $5.00 and is a perennial favorite.
  • Toasted Pretzel Bread topped with Black Forest Ham and Melted Cheese also at Bauernmarkt (Germany Pavilion): For a savory indulgence, this $6.00 item features soft pretzel bread generously topped with ham and gooey cheese, a consistently popular choice.

The AllEars Snack Hack at Pizzafari (Animal Kingdom):

Pizzafari, often considered a basic quick-service spot, holds an unexpected delight. A “genius snack hack” involves ordering the Garlic Cheese Bread (three generously sliced pieces of toasted garlic bread with melted cheese on one side, $6.99) and a cup of the Tomato Bisque Soup (a creamy tomato soup featuring herbed goat cheese, $5.79). Dipping the cheesy garlic bread into the savory soup creates a comforting “grilled cheese and soup” experience. This elevates Pizzafari beyond its standard pizza fare, offering a surprisingly satisfying and flavorful light meal or substantial snack, especially as recent reviews have praised these specific items for their quality.

The Evolving “Loaded Fries” at Flame Tree Barbecue (Animal Kingdom):

The legend of “secret menu” loaded fries at Flame Tree Barbecue continues, though the specific offerings change. The previously popular A-Maize-ing Magic Munch Fries are confirmed to be off the menu. However, delicious alternatives are readily available. Currently, the menu features Black Garlic, Truffle, and Parmesan Fries for $6.49, which are French fries topped with a black garlic-truffle aïoli and Parmesan cheese. Another option is the French Fries with Pulled Pork and Cheese for $8.49. These official menu items ensure that Flame Tree Barbecue remains a destination for gourmet fry enthusiasts, even if the “secret” has evolved into plainly listed excellence.

A Hidden Choux at the Grand Floridian:

For those venturing to Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, or for dedicated foodies on a mission, the Mickey Chocolate Choux at Gasparilla Island Grill is a noteworthy indulgence. This rich Chocolate Pâte à Choux is generously filled with Chocolate Chantilly Cream and priced at $6.79. Its reputation as a “hidden gem” often circulates on social media, making it a special treat worth seeking out if you’re in the vicinity.

Trending Tastes & Crowd-Pleasers: The People’s Choice

Beyond the brand new and the creatively hacked, certain snacks and dishes consistently generate buzz and earn high marks from guests. Here’s a taste of what’s trending across the parks and resorts, verified by recent reviews and online discussions:

Magic Kingdom:

  • Candied Bacon Skewer from Westward Ho (Frontierland): A substantial skewer of thick-cut bacon, generously coated in brown sugar and served with a side of chips. Its delightful sweet-and-savory profile makes it a standout. Price: $9.99.
  • Pineapple Upside-Down Cake with Dole Whip from Aloha Isle (Adventureland): A classic Dole Whip gets an upgrade, served atop a moist pineapple upside-down cake, intensifying the tropical flavors. Price: $6.99.
  • Crème Brûlée Croissant from Gaston’s Tavern (Fantasyland): This relatively new addition quickly won hearts with its crispy croissant dough encasing a luscious vanilla bean custard. Price: $5.49.
  • Cheeseburger Spring Rolls from the Adventureland Spring Roll Cart: A cult favorite for a reason, these savory spring rolls are a unique snack that often sells out later in the day. Price: $9.50 for two.
  • Warm Cinnamon Roll from Gaston’s Tavern (Fantasyland): This colossal, shareable cinnamon roll is a beloved Magic Kingdom institution. Price: $6.99.
  • Fresh Fruit Waffle Sandwich (with Nutella) from Sleepy Hollow (Liberty Square): Though not explicitly detailed in recent May snippets, this is a perennial fan favorite, often cited in “best snack” lists for its delicious combination of a fresh waffle, fruit, and Nutella. Current availability and price should be verified in the park.

EPCOT (Non-Festival Standouts):

  • Caramel Treats from Karamell-Küche (Germany Pavilion): Home to all things Werther’s Original caramel, this shop is a must-visit. Popular items include the Caramel Popcorn (approx. $7-8), the rich Caramel Butter Bar (approx. $5), and various other caramel-coated delights. Prices vary.
  • School Bread from Kringla Bakeri Og Kafe (Norway Pavilion): An iconic EPCOT snack, this sweet cardamom bun is filled with vanilla custard and topped with icing and toasted coconut. A consistent crowd-pleaser. Price: approx. $4.99.
  • Croque Glacé from L’Artisan des Glaces (France Pavilion): A unique ice cream sandwich where your choice of ice cream and sauce is pressed warm inside a homemade brioche. A decadent treat, though some find it slightly overrated. Price: approx. $9.50.

Hollywood Studios:

  • Jack-Jack Cookie Num Num from Market (Pixar Place): A warm, thick, and gooey chocolate chip cookie that’s perfect for sharing (or not!). Price: approx. $6.19.
  • Ronto Wrap from Ronto Roasters (Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge): This popular savory wrap features roasted pork, grilled pork sausage, a peppercorn sauce, and tangy slaw nestled in a pita. Price: approx. $13.49. While a fan favorite, a few voices find it overhyped.
  • Totchos from Woody’s Lunch Box (Toy Story Land): A hearty and flavorful portion of “potato barrels” (tater tots) loaded with beef and bean chili, cheese, queso, tomatoes, corn chips, sour cream, and green onions. Price: approx. $10.49.

Animal Kingdom:

  • Cheeseburger Steamed Pods from Satu’li Canteen (Pandora – The World of Avatar): These unique bao buns are filled with all the flavors of a cheeseburger and served with crunchy vegetable slaw and vegetable chips. Price: approx. $13.29 for two pods with chips.
  • Mr. Kamal’s Seasoned Fries from Mr. Kamal’s (Asia): A simple yet satisfying snack of perfectly seasoned fries served with a selection of dipping sauces. Price: approx. $5.99.
  • Night Blossom (non-alcoholic drink) from Pongu Pongu (Pandora – The World of Avatar): A visually stunning and refreshingly sweet drink with layers of apple and desert pear limeade, topped with passion fruit boba balls. Price: approx. $6.29.

Disney Springs:

  • Mac and Cheese from Art Smith’s Homecomin’: Often hailed as some of the best mac and cheese anywhere, this creamy, cheesy delight is a must-try. Price: approx. $10 as a side, or part of entrees priced around $28-$34.
  • Original Chocolate Chip Cookie from Gideon’s Bakehouse: These nearly half-pound, decadent cookies are legendary. Expect a potential virtual queue just to enter the shop due to their popularity. Price: approx. $6.00 per cookie.

Many of these trending items are quick-service or kiosk offerings, reflecting a guest preference for flexible, exploratory dining that allows for sampling a wide array of unique flavors and thematic treats.

Mastering Your Meals: Dining Optimization & Unexpected Hacks

Navigating the culinary landscape of Walt Disney World efficiently can save both time and money, enhancing your overall experience.

Mobile Order Mastery:

The Mobile Order feature in the My Disney Experience app is an indispensable tool:

  • Order Early & Schedule Ahead: For popular quick-service restaurants like Woody’s Lunch Box or Satu’li Canteen, place your orders early in the day and select a pickup window for later. This secures your meal and avoids decision-making when hunger (and crowds) peak.
  • Strategic “I’m Here” Timing: Tap the “I’m Here, Prepare My Order” button in the app about 5 to 10 minutes before you physically arrive at the restaurant. This often means your food will be ready, or very nearly ready, upon your arrival, minimizing your wait.
  • Utilize Filters: When searching for immediate food options, use the “Nearby” and “Available Now” filters within the Mobile Order section of the app. This is a lifesaver for quickly finding something without scrolling through every restaurant.
  • The Sweet Exit (Magic Kingdom): A clever trick is to mobile order treats from the Main Street Confectionery (perhaps their customizable popcorn mix) for pickup as you are leaving Magic Kingdom. This allows you to bypass the end-of-day rush for souvenirs and snacks.

Disney Dining Plan (DDP) Wisdom (Contextual):

While not all guests utilize the Disney Dining Plan, understanding its general value can be helpful:

  • A Quick Service meal credit is typically valued around $24, a Table Service credit around $60, and a Snack credit around $7.
  • Many EPCOT festival booth items qualify as a snack credit, offering good value, especially for items priced over $6.
  • Meal credits include a nonalcoholic beverage, which can be higher-value options like milkshakes, fresh smoothies, or premium hot chocolate.

Lesser-Known Savings & Strategies:

  • Share and Sample: Many snack and quick-service portions are generous. Sharing allows your group to try a wider variety of items without overspending or overeating.
  • Kids’ Meals for Adults: At quick-service locations, adults are permitted to order kids’ meals. These are often a more appropriately sized portion for a lighter appetite, come with a drink and a side, and are priced lower – perfect for saving room for more snacks.
  • Snacks as Meals: Don’t underestimate the heartiness of some snacks. Items like the Ronto Wrap, Totchos, or many substantial festival booth offerings can easily serve as a light meal, offering both flavor and value.
  • Complimentary Water: All quick-service locations will provide free cups of ice water upon request. Bringing your own reusable water bottle to refill at water fountains or bottle-filling stations is also a smart way to stay hydrated and save money.
  • Grocery Delivery to Your Resort: Utilize services like Instacart, Amazon Fresh, or local Orlando grocery delivery companies to have breakfast items, snacks, and beverages delivered directly to your Disney resort. This can significantly cut down on in-park food expenses. Be mindful that standard room refrigerators are typically small, more like drink coolers, so plan accordingly for perishable items.

These strategies, particularly the savvy use of Mobile Order and an awareness of portion sizes and shareable options, transform dining from a simple necessity into an optimized and enjoyable part of your Disney adventure.

Beyond the Castle Walls: Insider Secrets for a Unique Disney Experience

While the iconic Cinderella Castle photo is a must for many, venturing off the beaten path can yield equally stunning and far less crowded photographic memories:

  • Magic Kingdom:Seek out Center Street, a quiet offshoot of Main Street, U.S.A., for a charming, less bustling perspective of the streetscape.
  • The Main Street U.S.A. Train Station platform provides a wonderful elevated view looking back towards Cinderella Castle.
  • For a unique angle of the castle itself, explore the path connecting the main Hub with Liberty Square, specifically near the walkway that leads from Liberty Square to Fantasyland, offering a compelling side profile of Cinderella Castle.
  • EPCOT:The Morocco Pavilion is a labyrinth of intricate arches, detailed tilework, and quiet courtyards, offering countless opportunities for atmospheric shots.
  • In the Italy Pavilion, discover the elegant arches on the left side as you face the pavilion, near the Il Bel Cristallo shop, for a touch of European charm.
  • The Canada Pavilion boasts its own “castle,” the Hotel du Canada (above Le Cellier Steakhouse), which provides a majestic backdrop, especially when framed by the surrounding gardens.
  • Animal Kingdom:In Pandora – The World of Avatar, find the picturesque waterfall located to the right of the Na’vi River Journey entrance, on the way to Flight of Passage.
  • Capture the essence of Harambe by photographing the Port of Entry to the Africa section, found on the main path and bridge leading into this immersive land.
  • The bridge connecting Asia and Dinoland U.S.A. (situated between the Finding Nemo: The Big Blue… and Beyond! theater and Expedition Everest) offers dynamic views of both Expedition Everest and the Discovery River Lagoon.
  • Disney Resort Hotels (for those exploring beyond the parks):At Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, the area behind the Wedding Pavilion offers serene water views and elegant architecture.
  • Discover the charming waterfall just past Roaring Fork quick-service location at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge, on the way to the pool area.
  • The Mickey Ears Pop Art wall, located near the pool area and boat dock at Disney’s Contemporary Resort, provides a fun, retro photo opportunity.

These locations not only offer unique visual appeal but also a chance to capture your memories without the throngs often found at more famous photo spots, aligning with the desire for novel and insider experiences.

Character interactions are a cherished part of the Disney experience, and new and evolving opportunities often arise.

  • New & Roaming Characters:A very current and exciting development is the arrival of Romeo McGrowl from the recently reimagined Country Bear Musical Jamboree. As of May 5, 2025, Romeo has begun making meet-and-greet appearances in Frontierland at Magic Kingdom, typically near Grizzly Hall. He joins fellow Country Bears Big Al, Wendell, and Shaker, who also roam the area. This offers a fresh character interaction that many guests may not yet be aware of.
  • V.I.PASSHOLDER Summer Days:For Annual Passholders, the V.I.PASSHOLDER Summer Days event kicks off during your visit, running from May 14th through July 31st, 2025.
  • Confirmed perks for this event include a new Passholder-exclusive magnet, special merchandise and dining discounts, and the return of a dedicated Passholder lounge. While the 2025 lounge location is yet to be announced as of early May, in previous years it has been hosted at locations like Restaurant Marrakesh in EPCOT, offering complimentary snacks, water, and charging stations. If you are an Annual Passholder, this is a significant benefit. Even if not, being aware of this event can help explain any AP-focused activities or increased presence in certain areas, like a potential lounge.
  • “Cool Kid Summer” Character Enhancements (Context for Evolving Experiences):While the full “Cool Kid Summer” initiative officially launches on May 27th, Disney has indicated that as part of this focus on families with young children, characters will begin appearing earlier in the day during the Early Theme Park Entry period for resort hotel guests. It’s possible this enhancement could see a soft rollout or be in effect by mid-May. Keep an eye on the My Disney Experience app for updated character appearance times.
  • General Tips for Rare Character Sightings:While specific “hidden” meet-and-greet locations are uncommon and subject to change, it’s always advisable to check the My Disney Experience app frequently throughout your park day. Unannounced or less common characters sometimes make surprise appearances, particularly in EPCOT’s World Showcase pavilions or occasionally at resort hotels. Disney sometimes features rare character couples for brief, often unadvertised, special occasions (like Valentine’s Day), illustrating the dynamic nature of character appearances.

These evolving character experiences, from new meet-and-greets like Romeo McGrowl to seasonal Passholder events, provide fresh layers of magic to discover.

The magic of Disney World isn’t always about grand purchases; sometimes, the most cherished mementos are free, and unique perks can add unexpected value.

  • Celebration Buttons: A classic and beloved freebie! Complimentary celebration buttons for occasions like “Happy Birthday,” “First Visit,” “I’m Celebrating,” “Happily Ever After,” and more are readily available at Guest Relations lobbies in all theme parks and at the front desks or concierge locations of Disney Resort hotels. Wearing these can often lead to special interactions with Cast Members and even occasional small surprises.
  • Resort-Specific Freebies – The Port Orleans Trivia Prize: An excellent example of a unique, localized free souvenir can be found at Jackson Square Gifts & Desires at Disney’s Port Orleans Resort – French Quarter. They often host a fun trivia game (themes rotate, sometimes Hocus Pocus, for example), and participants who successfully complete it may receive an exclusive prize, such as a button featuring Ray from The Princess and the Frog. It’s always worth politely inquiring at your resort’s gift shop or front desk about any small, complimentary activities or keepsakes they might offer.
  • Free Water Park Admission on Check-In Day: A significant perk for guests staying at Disney Resort Collection hotels throughout 2025 is complimentary admission to one of Disney’s water parks on their check-in day (subject to availability and operating hours). With Typhoon Lagoon open throughout your visit and Blizzard Beach reopening on May 21st, this is a fantastic way to kick off your vacation, especially given the May warmth. Your admission should be automatically linked to your My Disney Experience account on check-in day.
  • Transportation Cards & Stickers: While not guaranteed, sometimes Cast Members operating Disney transportation (bus drivers, monorail pilots, boat captains) may have collectible transportation cards to give out if asked politely. Similarly, Cast Members in retail locations or at Kidcot Fun Stops in EPCOT often have character stickers available for children. These are small, delightful “hidden” freebies.
  • Kid Zones & Activities (Context for “Cool Kid Summer”): Although the full “Cool Kid Summer” program with dedicated kid zones in Magic Kingdom (Storybook Circus, Tomorrowland with Stitch) and a Goofy-hosted play space in EPCOT’s CommuniCore Hall (after its refurbishment May 12-26) officially begins May 27th, the general push for more family and child-focused activities might result in some unadvertised pop-up play areas or simple games appearing earlier in May.

These free souvenirs and perks not only enhance the value of your trip but also create opportunities for memorable interactions and discoveries.

Lesser-Known Things To Do (Beyond the Rides)

For a change of pace or to explore different facets of Walt Disney World, consider these often-overlooked activities:

  • Tri-Circle-D Ranch at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground: Escape the park bustle with a visit to the ranch, offering horseback trail rides (for guests aged 9 and older), gentle pony rides for younger children, and charming wagon rides. It’s a wonderful way to connect with nature and experience a different side of Disney.
  • Harmony Barber Shop on Main Street, U.S.A. (Magic Kingdom): Step back in time at this authentic, old-fashioned barbershop. They offer haircuts for guests of all ages, but a particularly special offering is the “My First Haircut” package, which includes a commemorative certificate, a special pair of Mickey Mouse ears, and a keepsake lock of hair – a truly memorable milestone.
  • Cake Decorating Experience at Amorette’s Patisserie (Disney Springs): For the creatively inclined, Amorette’s offers a 90-minute cake decorating class where participants, guided by Disney pastry artists, can design their own character-inspired dome cake (often Mickey Mouse or a seasonal design). It’s a fun, hands-on activity perfect for a non-park day or a special treat.
  • Miniature Golf: Walt Disney World features two whimsical miniature golf locations: Fantasia Gardens & Fairways Miniature Golf and Winter Summerland Miniature Golf. While the Winter Summerland courses are undergoing a phased refurbishment from April 28th to June 16th, one of its two courses is expected to remain open for play. These offer a fun, low-key recreational option outside the theme parks.
  • Resort Activities: Don’t overlook the array of activities offered at your Disney Resort hotel. Schedules often include movies under the stars, poolside games, arts and crafts, and more. The “Cool Kid Summer” initiative will further enhance these offerings at select resorts (Disney’s Art of Animation Resort, Disney’s Pop Century Resort, Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort, and Disney’s Wilderness Lodge) with scheduled character visits and expanded family activities starting May 27th. Even before this official launch, it’s always worth checking your specific resort’s recreation schedule for May.
  • Relaxing & Educational EPCOT Experiences:Living with the Land: This gentle boat ride in The Land Pavilion at EPCOT offers a fascinating look at innovative agricultural techniques and Disney’s impressive greenhouses. It’s educational, relaxing, and typically has a very short wait.
  • The Seas with Nemo & Friends Pavilion Manatee Viewing: After the main ride, take time to explore the aquarium, which includes a dedicated manatee rehabilitation habitat. Observing these gentle giants is a peaceful and heartwarming experience often missed by guests rushing through.
  • Classic Magic Kingdom Attractions for a Breather:Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover: This elevated, slow-moving ride provides a relaxing tour of Tomorrowland, offering unique views (including glimpses into Space Mountain) and a welcome breeze. Lines are rarely long.
  • Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress: A true piece of Disney history, originally created by Walt Disney himself for the 1964 New York World’s Fair. This rotating theater show offers a nostalgic journey through 20th-century innovation, an air-conditioned respite, and almost never has a significant wait.

These lesser-known activities provide diverse experiences, offering enjoyable breaks from the high-energy pace of park touring and catering to a wide range of interests, adding unique layers to your Disney World vacation.

Overall Trend & Optimal Dates: The period from May 7-8 and particularly May 12-16 and May 19-20 are predicted to offer the lightest and most manageable crowd levels within your travel window. These dates fall between the youth sporting events and before the Memorial Day holiday surge (which typically begins to build from May 23rd) and the opening of Universal’s Epic Universe on May 22nd. The early closure of EPCOT on May 21st is a critical factor for that specific day.

Crowd Drivers during your visit:

  • EPCOT International Flower & Garden Festival: This event draws many locals and Disney fans, particularly to EPCOT on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, making World Showcase busier during these times.
  • Youth Sporting Events: The D2 Summit (May 9-11) and the Special Olympics Florida Summer Games (May 16-17) will bring participants and their families, primarily impacting Value resorts (All-Stars, Pop Century) and Coronado Springs. While these events don’t usually swamp the parks, you may notice larger groups of attendees, especially in parks like Hollywood Studios or EPCOT on certain days.
  • Weekend Crowds: Saturdays and Sundays generally see an uptick in attendance due to local visitors and overlapping vacation schedules.
  • Lead-up to Memorial Day & Epic Universe Opening: Towards the end of your window (May 21st), the general Orlando area will be buzzing with the May 22nd opening of Universal’s Epic Universe. While this might draw some attention away from Disney parks right before it opens, it also signals the start of the busier summer season.

The period of May 12-16, in particular, is often cited as a “predictable lull” and a “top pick” for lower crowds. This synthesis of data from various sources provides a more nuanced forecast than a single crowd calendar might offer.

Strategic Timings: Best & Worst Times of Day for Each Park

  • Universal Rule: The first hour of park operation (especially with Early Theme Park Entry) and the last hour typically see the shortest wait times. Crowds and wait times generally peak between late morning and late afternoon (around 10 AM to 5 PM). The Florida heat and humidity also peak mid-day, making an afternoon break at your resort a wise strategy.
  • Magic Kingdom: Wait times tend to be lowest from park opening until about 10:00 AM, and again in the last hour or two before closing, especially during the fireworks. Midday (1:00 PM – 5:00 PM) is typically the most congested.
  • EPCOT: World Showcase generally opens later (usually 11:00 AM) than World Celebration, World Discovery, and World Nature. During festivals, World Showcase becomes busier in the afternoons and especially on weekend evenings. Tackle headliners in the front of the park (like Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind or Test Track when open) early.
  • Hollywood Studios: This park’s high concentration of E-ticket attractions means it can feel crowded quickly. Arriving for rope drop is paramount. Headliners like Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance and Slinky Dog Dash maintain long waits for most of the day. Evenings can offer some relief as day guests depart.
  • Animal Kingdom: Mornings are often best, not only for lower crowds but also because the animals on Kilimanjaro Safaris are generally more active in the cooler morning hours. The park can feel very hot and humid in the afternoon. Wednesdays and Tuesdays are often reported as less crowded than Saturdays and Mondays for this park. Note that Animal Kingdom often has earlier closing times than other parks.

Refurbishments & Closures: Planning Around the Changes (May 7-21, 2025)

Several refurbishments and closures will be in effect during your visit, impacting attraction availability and park experiences.

The closure of major attractions like Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and Test Track will undoubtedly shift crowd patterns, likely increasing wait times at other E-ticket rides. The permanent closure of Mama Melrose’s Ristorante Italiano on May 10th, and the upcoming closures in the Muppets Courtyard area of Hollywood Studios (Muppet*Vision 3D and PizzeRizzo on June 7th), signal significant transformations underway, particularly with the development of a new Monsters Inc. land. The early closure of EPCOT on May 21st is a critical planning note, requiring adjustments for any evening plans in that park. The reopening of Blizzard Beach on May 21st is a welcome development, offering two water park choices for the very end of your potential travel window.

Mastering the Lines: Queues, Passes, and Arrival Strategies

Efficiently navigating attraction lines is a cornerstone of a successful Walt Disney World visit. Understanding the current state of Lightning Lanes, Virtual Queues, and arrival strategies is key.

Lightning Lane (LL) Deep Dive:

Walt Disney World offers a multi-faceted approach to shorter attraction queues via its Lightning Lane system. As of May 2025, there are three primary ways to access these expedited lines:

  1. Lightning Lane Multi Pass (LLMP): This is the evolution of the former Genie+ service. It’s a per-person, per-day purchase that allows guests to book rolling return times for Lightning Lane entrances at many attractions within a single park. If you have a ticket with the Park Hopper option, you can make selections for other parks you plan to visit that day. The price for LLMP is dynamic, varying by park and anticipated demand, generally ranging from $15 to $39 per person, per day. For early to mid-May 2025, historical data suggests average park-specific prices might hover in the $22-$26 range, though this can fluctuate.
  • Magic Kingdom LLMP: Typically $25-$39
  • EPCOT LLMP: Typically $19-$32
  • Hollywood Studios LLMP: Typically $21-$35
  • Animal Kingdom LLMP: Typically $15-$29
  1. Lightning Lane Single Pass (LLSP): Formerly known as Individual Lightning Lane (ILL), this option allows guests to purchase à la carte access to the Lightning Lane for one or two of each park’s most high-demand attractions, which are not included with the LLMP. Prices are also dynamic, typically ranging from $10 to $25 per person, per ride.
  • Magic Kingdom LLSP Attractions: Seven Dwarfs Mine Train (approx. $11-$14), TRON Lightcycle / Run (approx. $20).
  • EPCOT LLSP Attraction: Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind (approx. $14-$19). (Test Track, when operational, was also an LLSP).
  • Hollywood Studios LLSP Attraction: Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance (approx. $15-$25).
  • Animal Kingdom LLSP Attraction: Avatar Flight of Passage (approx. $11-$18).
  1. Lightning Lane Premier Pass (LLPP): This is a newer, premium all-inclusive option that bundles access to many Lightning Lanes, including some that would otherwise be LLSP purchases. The price for LLPP varies dramatically by park and date, ranging from $129 to $449 per person, per day. Demand for the Premier Pass at Magic Kingdom and Hollywood Studios is very high, often selling out quickly even at peak prices, especially for guests who cannot purchase it 7 days in advance.

Key Strategies for Lightning Lane Multi Pass (LLMP):

  • Significant On-Site Advantage: Guests staying at Walt Disney World Resort hotels (and select partner hotels) can purchase LLMP and make their first ride selections starting at 7:00 AM on the day of their park visit. Crucially, these on-site guests can purchase LLMP up to 7 days in advance for their entire length of stay (up to 14 days). Off-site guests, conversely, can only make LLMP ride reservations up to 3 days in advance. This extended booking window for on-site guests provides a substantial advantage in securing initial high-priority Lightning Lane selections, as many popular attractions may have limited availability by the time off-site guests can book.
  • Prioritize Headliners: When making your initial LLMP selections, target the most popular attractions first, even if the return time is later in the day. Examples include Slinky Dog Dash, Peter Pan’s Flight, Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, Frozen Ever After, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, Na’vi River Journey, and Kilimanjaro Safaris.
  • The “Rolling 3 Rule” & “Burner” LLs: A sophisticated strategy for LLMP involves the “rolling 3 rule,” which implies you can often hold up to three Lightning Lane selections at a time (subject to availability and park-specific tiering, if applicable). As soon as you tap into one Lightning Lane, you can immediately book another. To maximize this, consider using “burner” Lightning Lanes – selecting attractions with shorter waits and quicker experiences (e.g., The Magic Carpets of Aladdin, Alien Swirling Saucers). Tapping into these quickly frees up a slot, allowing you to book another, potentially higher-priority attraction sooner.
  • Stacking for Later & Park Hopping: If you plan to arrive at a park later or intend to Park Hop, you can strategically book LLMP selections for later in the day at your first park, or begin booking for your second park once eligible.
  • The Refresh Game: Availability in the My Disney Experience app changes constantly. Persistently refreshing the app can reveal better return times or newly dropped availability for attractions (“TBA Refills” or “Refills”).
  • Modifying Selections: You can modify an existing Lightning Lane selection (either the attraction or the time) without losing your place in the virtual queue system for that selection, subject to current availability. This offers flexibility if your plans change.
  • When to Consider Skipping LLMP: On days with anticipated very light crowds, or if your park day is focused more on shows, atmosphere, and dining rather than maximizing ride count, LLMP might be less essential. Animal Kingdom, with fewer LLMP attractions overall, is sometimes cited as a park where it can be skipped, especially with good rope drop strategy.

Virtual Queues (VQ) – A Major Update:

As of February 25, 2025, no major attractions at Walt Disney World are utilizing a Virtual Queue system for daily access. Both Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind at EPCOT and Tiana’s Bayou Adventure at Magic Kingdom have transitioned to traditional standby queues. This is a significant operational shift.

  • The Virtual Queue mentioned for the May 4th merchandise event at Hollywood Studios was a one-day, specific event and is not relevant for ongoing attraction access. Similarly, any discussion of a Haunted Mansion virtual queue pertains to Disneyland and was a temporary measure during construction there.
  • Impact of No VQs: This change simplifies morning routines for guests, as the 7:00 AM rush to join a VQ for these popular rides is no longer necessary. However, it also means that standby lines for these attractions will likely be longer throughout the day. This places even greater emphasis on effective rope drop strategies or utilizing Lightning Lane Single Pass for these specific rides if you wish to minimize wait times. Disney may reintroduce VQs for future new attraction openings or special seasonal offerings.

Single Rider Lines:

  • Official Availability: Single Rider lines are officially listed for:
  • Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run (Hollywood Studios)
  • Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith (Hollywood Studios)
  • Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure (EPCOT)
  • Expedition Everest – Legend of the Forbidden Mountain (Animal Kingdom).
  • Unofficial/Intermittent Availability: Test Track at EPCOT (when operational) and sometimes Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance at Hollywood Studios may also offer Single Rider, though these are not always officially listed or consistently available. Information about Single Rider availability is now more prominently displayed on in-park wait time boards and within the My Disney Experience app.
  • Strategy: This is an excellent option if members of your party are willing to be split up to fill empty seats in ride vehicles. Wait times can be significantly shorter than standby, though they are not always posted.
  • Important Notes: Immediate boarding or choice of seat is not guaranteed. All Single Riders must meet all standard boarding requirements for the attraction.

Rider Switch (Child Swap):

  • How It Works: If a child in your party does not meet an attraction’s height requirement or simply does not wish to ride, the Rider Switch service allows one adult to ride while another adult waits with the non-riding child. Afterward, the adults can switch places without the second adult having to wait in the regular line again.
  • Procedure: Approach the Cast Member at the main entrance of the attraction with your entire party. The Cast Member will validate the non-riding child and provide a Rider Switch entitlement (usually scanned onto the MagicBand or park ticket of the waiting adult and up to two other guests). The first group rides, and then the waiting adult (and their accompanying guests) can return via the Lightning Lane entrance.
  • Value: This service is invaluable for families with young children, ensuring that both supervising adults can experience thrill attractions without making anyone wait alone or miss out.

Rope Drop Dominance (Arrival Strategy):

Arriving at the theme parks before official opening, known as “rope drop,” remains one ofthe most effective strategies for experiencing popular attractions with lower wait times.

  • Early Theme Park Entry (ETPE): This crucial perk is available daily for all guests staying at Disney Resort hotels and select partner hotels. It allows entry into all four theme parks 30 minutes before the official park opening time.
  • New for Summer 2025 (potentially soft-launching in May): As part of the “Cool Kid Summer” initiative, select character meet-and-greets will also become available during Early Theme Park Entry. This adds another dimension to the ETPE benefit.
  • Recommended Arrival: Aim to be at the park gates at least 45-60 minutes before the start of Early Theme Park Entry if targeting the most popular headliners, or 30 minutes before official park opening if not eligible for ETPE or targeting less popular rides.
  • Magic Kingdom Rope Drop Strategy:With ETPE: Prioritize TRON Lightcycle / Run (now standby), Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, or Peter Pan’s Flight. Space Mountain is another solid choice.
  • Without ETPE / After ETPE rides: Consider starting in Adventureland (Jungle Cruise first, as its line builds quickly) or Frontierland (Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, now standby). Many guests with ETPE will initially focus on Fantasyland and Tomorrowland.
  • EPCOT Rope Drop Strategy:With ETPE (Main Entrance): Head for Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind (now standby) or Test Track (when operational). Soarin’ Around the World or Spaceship Earth are good follow-ups.
  • With ETPE (International Gateway Entrance – for guests of Crescent Lake or Skyliner resorts): Prioritize Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, then Frozen Ever After.
  • Hollywood Studios Rope Drop Strategy:With ETPE: Make a beeline for Slinky Dog Dash or Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance (now standby). The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror™ is another excellent early target.
  • Without ETPE / After ETPE rides: Head to the other headliner not accomplished during ETPE, or to Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run.
  • Animal Kingdom Rope Drop Strategy:With ETPE: Go directly to Pandora – The World of Avatar and ride Avatar Flight of Passage (now standby) first, followed by Na’vi River Journey. Expedition Everest is also a strong choice for ETPE.
  • Without ETPE / After ETPE rides: Kilimanjaro Safaris is a great first ride at official park opening (it is NOT included in ETPE, and animals are often more active in the morning). Alternatively, target attractions not completed during ETPE.

Park Hopping Prowess:

  • Current Rules: All-day Park Hopping is in effect. Guests with the Park Hopper ticket option can switch to another park at any time of day (the previous 2:00 PM restriction no longer applies), provided they have first entered the park for which they hold a park reservation (if reservations are still required for their ticket type).
  • Strategy: Maximize your morning at your first park using rope drop and/or Early Theme Park Entry. Consider hopping to a second park in the afternoon or evening. This can be combined with stacking Lightning Lane Multi Pass selections for your second park. Always factor in travel time between parks and the closing times and evening entertainment schedules of the parks you plan to visit.

Leveraging Extra Hours: Early Theme Park Entry & Extended Evening Theme Park Hours (EETH):

  • Early Theme Park Entry (ETPE): As detailed above, this 30-minute head start is invaluable for resort guests.
  • Extended Evening Theme Park Hours (EETH): This highly beneficial perk is exclusively for guests staying at Disney Deluxe Resorts and Disney Deluxe Villa Resorts (and other select qualifying hotels like the Swan, Dolphin, and Shades of Green). It offers two additional hours in a select theme park on select nights after it has closed to the general public.
  • EETH Schedule for May 7-21, 2025:Magic Kingdom: Wednesday, May 7th (10:00 PM – 12:00 AM); Wednesday, May 14th (10:00 PM – 12:00 AM); Wednesday, May 21st (10:00 PM – 12:00 AM).
  • EPCOT: Monday, May 12th (9:00 PM – 11:00 PM); Monday, May 19th (9:00 PM – 11:00 PM).
  • (Note: Animal Kingdom had EETH on May 5th, just prior to your window, indicating it occasionally features in the rotation).
  • Attractions Typically Open During EETH at Magic Kingdom: Most major attractions usually operate, including TRON Lightcycle / Run (standby), Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, Space Mountain, Peter Pan’s Flight, Haunted Mansion, Jungle Cruise, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, “it’s a small world,” Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin, The Barnstormer, Dumbo the Flying Elephant, Mad Tea Party, The Magic Carpets of Aladdin, Prince Charming Regal Carrousel, Tomorrowland Speedway, and Under the Sea ~ Journey of The Little Mermaid. Country Bear Musical Jamboree and Swiss Family Treehouse may also be open. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will be closed due to its long-term refurbishment.
  • Attractions Typically Open During EETH at EPCOT: Key attractions such as Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, Frozen Ever After, Test Track (when operational), Soarin’ Around the World, Spaceship Earth, Mission: SPACE, and The Seas with Nemo & Friends are typically available.
  • Value of EETH: This perk offers significantly lower wait times for some of the most popular attractions in Walt Disney World due to the limited number of eligible guests. It’s a major advantage for those staying at Deluxe Resorts.

The absence of Virtual Queues for Tiana’s Bayou Adventure and Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind is a critical update for your May 2025 visit, shifting the dynamic for accessing these headliners towards traditional standby lines, Lightning Lane purchases, or very effective rope drop strategies. The substantial advantage for on-site guests in booking Lightning Lane Multi Pass selections further out than off-site guests also underscores the benefits of staying within the Disney Resort hotel system if LLMP is a priority.

Lesser-Known Money-Saving Tactics:

Beyond official promotions, several smart strategies can yield significant savings:

  • Discounted Disney Gift Cards: One of the most consistently effective ways to save is by purchasing Disney gift cards at a discount. Using a Target RedCard (debit or credit) grants an automatic 5% off most purchases, including Disney gift cards bought in-store or online. Warehouse clubs like Sam’s Club and Costco also occasionally offer Disney gift cards at a slight discount. This 5% savings can accumulate substantially when applied to the overall cost of a vacation, as these gift cards can be used for park tickets, resort stays, dining, and merchandise.
  • Disney Visa Card Perks: If you are a Disney Visa cardholder, you are eligible for several discounts within Walt Disney World. This typically includes 10% off select merchandise purchases of $50 or more at Disney-owned-and-operated stores, and 10% off at select Disney-owned-and-operated dining locations (usually quick-service and some table-service, alcohol often excluded). Additionally, cardholders can sometimes receive 15% off select tours, carriage rides, and horseback trail rides.
  • Pack Your Own Provisions: Disney allows guests to bring their own food and non-alcoholic beverages into the theme parks (no glass containers, no loose ice, and no alcohol are permitted). Packing snacks, water bottles, and even light lunch items can lead to considerable savings compared to purchasing all meals and snacks in the parks.
  • Grocery Delivery to Your Resort: Leverage services like Instacart, Amazon Fresh, or local Orlando providers such as Garden Grocer to have groceries delivered directly to your Disney resort hotel. This is ideal for breakfast items (cereal, fruit, yogurt), drinks, and snacks, further reducing in-park food expenditures. Remember that standard room refrigerators are typically beverage cooler size, so plan perishables accordingly.
  • Consider Kids’ Meals for Adults: At quick-service dining locations, adults are permitted to order from the children’s menu. These meals often include an entrée, a side dish (like fruit or yogurt), and a small beverage for a significantly lower price than adult entrées. This is an excellent option for lighter appetites or to save room (and budget) for more snacks throughout the day.
  • Complimentary Resort Transportation: Utilizing Disney’s extensive network of free transportation – buses, monorails, the Disney Skyliner, and water taxis – eliminates the need for a rental car for on-property travel and saves on theme park parking fees (currently $30 per day for standard parking) or ride-sharing costs.

For many guests visiting during your May 7-21 window, the “Stay Longer, Save More” room discount of up to 30% for 5+ night stays will be the most impactful official offer. Combining this with the 5% savings from purchasing Disney gift cards via a Target RedCard creates a potent, actionable savings strategy. The 3-Day, 3-Park ticket is a niche offer but could be valuable if Magic Kingdom is not a priority for those specific three days, or if you are planning a shorter, focused trip to the other three parks.

  • May 6-8: Hayfire
  • May 9-10: Jon Secada
  • May 11-12: Maverick City Music
  • May 13-15: Dian Diaz
  • May 16-17: The Spinners

These concerts are included with EPCOT admission and offer a fantastic way to enjoy live music in a beautiful setting. Showtimes are typically 5:30 PM, 6:45 PM, and 8:00 PM.

Show Reviews: Three Currently Running Spectacles You Shouldn’t Miss

Based on consistent guest satisfaction and their status as premier entertainment offerings, these three shows are highly recommended for your May 2025 visit:

Happily Ever After (Magic Kingdom):

  • Description: This breathtaking fireworks spectacular unfolds nightly over Cinderella Castle, transforming the iconic landmark with state-of-the-art projection mapping that extends down Main Street, U.S.A. The show is a journey through the heart, humor, and heroism of beloved Disney stories, all set to a soaring score featuring contemporary arrangements of classic Disney songs, enhanced by lasers and dazzling pyrotechnics.
  • Showtime (May 7-21, 2025): Typically 9:20 PM nightly. (A later 10:00 PM start time is scheduled from July 6, 2025, to accommodate the new parade, but the 9:20 PM time should hold for your visit).
  • Why You Might Like It (Guest Satisfaction): “Happily Ever After” is overwhelmingly praised by guests for its profound emotional impact. Reviewers consistently highlight the stunning fireworks, the intricacy and beauty of the castle projections, and the uplifting musical score. Many describe it as a “must-do” experience, the quintessential Magic Kingdom nighttime spectacular, and a show that often brings tears to their eyes while evoking cherished memories. Its AllEars.net reader rating is an impressive 9.59/10 with 97% recommending it.
  • Considerations: Main Street, U.S.A., and the Hub area become extremely crowded. Securing a good viewing spot often requires arriving 45-60 minutes (or more) in advance. While the spectacle is undeniable, a small number of viewers find the rapid succession of projected movie scenes slightly disjointed, though this is a minor critique against widespread acclaim.

Festival of the Lion King (Animal Kingdom – Harambe Theatre):

  • Description: This is a vibrant, high-energy, Broadway-caliber theatrical show presented in an indoor, air-conditioned theater-in-the-round. It’s a stunning celebration of the music and spirit of “The Lion King,” featuring talented live vocalists, colorfully costumed dancers, incredible acrobatic “Tumble Monkeys,” graceful aerial bird performers on stilts, a dynamic fire dancer, and audio-animatronic characters (Simba, Pumbaa, Timon) aboard parade-style floats that circle the stage.
  • Showtimes (May 7-21, 2025): Multiple performances are held throughout the day, typically on the hour from mid-morning (e.g., 10:00 AM, 11:00 AM, 12:00 PM) through late afternoon (e.g., 4:00 PM, 5:00 PM). It is essential to check the My Disney Experience app or the park’s Times Guide for the exact schedule on the day of your visit.
  • Why You Might Like It (Guest Satisfaction): “Festival of the Lion King” is consistently lauded as one of Walt Disney World’s best live entertainment offerings. Guest reviews overflow with praise for the exceptional talent of the performers (especially the lead vocalists and the Tumble Monkeys), the spectacular costumes, the engaging audience participation segments, and the show’s ability to evoke joy and emotion. Many guests report it as a highlight of their Animal Kingdom day and a show they see on every trip. Recent guest experiences even highlight the potential for “pixie dust” moments, where families might be chosen for special participation. The show also features MagicBand+ interactions that further enhance the experience for guests with these devices. Its AllEars.net reader rating is 8.19/10 with 85% recommending it.
  • Considerations: The theater utilizes bench seating, which some may find less comfortable for the approximately 30-minute show. While the theater capacity is large, it’s advisable to arrive 15-20 minutes before the scheduled showtime to secure a good seat, especially for popular performance times.

Fantasmic! (Hollywood Studios – Hollywood Hills Amphitheater):

  • Description: This grand-scale nighttime spectacular takes place on and around the waters of the Hollywood Hills Amphitheater. It’s an epic battle within Mickey Mouse’s dream, where he, as the Sorcerer’s Apprentice, confronts a host of Disney Villains, including a towering 40-foot-tall Maleficent in her dragon form. The show masterfully blends live actors, massive physical sets, character-filled boats gliding across the water, dazzling water screen projections, lasers, pyrotechnics, and a dramatic musical score.
  • Showtime (May 7-21, 2025): Typically presented once nightly at 9:00 PM. On particularly busy evenings, a second show might be added, but the 9:00 PM showing is the standard.
  • Why You Might Like It (Guest Satisfaction): “Fantasmic!” is celebrated for its classic Disney storytelling, impressive scale, and thrilling moments. Guests love seeing a multitude of characters, the awe-inspiring appearance of the Maleficent dragon breathing real fire, and the heartwarming finale. The powerful musical score is a key element in its emotional impact. Many consider it a quintessential Hollywood Studios experience and a fantastic way to end the day. Its AllEars.net reader rating is a strong 9.25/10 with 94% recommending it.
  • Considerations: The Hollywood Hills Amphitheater is vast, but desirable seats, especially those in the center sections, fill up quickly. It’s recommended to arrive 30-45 minutes (or even earlier for prime viewing) before showtime. Guests seated in the very front rows of certain sections may get lightly sprayed with water. The show features some intense scenes with villains that might be a bit scary for very young or sensitive children. Exiting the amphitheater after the show can be congested. Fantasmic! Dining Packages are available, which include a meal at a select Hollywood Studios restaurant and reserved seating for the show.

The Kingdom’s Chronicle: Late-Breaking News & What’s Next

  • GEO-82 Spaceship Earth Lounge (EPCOT) Reservations Open: Bookings for the new, adults-only GEO-82 lounge, located within Spaceship Earth and set to open on June 4th, 2025, began on May 6th, 2025. This is pertinent for those planning return trips or wanting to be among the first to experience this unique venue. Additionally, bookings for the GEO-82 Fireworks Experience, offering new views of the “Luminous The Symphony of Us” nighttime spectacular from tables near the lounge’s windows, also opened.
  • V.I.PASSHOLDER Summer Days Commence: This special event for Walt Disney World Annual Passholders is scheduled to begin on May 14th, 2025, and will run through July 31st. Perks include an exclusive Passholder magnet, special food and merchandise discounts, and the return of a dedicated Passholder lounge (2025 location TBD as of early May). This is highly relevant if you are an Annual Passholder.
  • New Character Meet & Greet: Romeo McGrowl (Magic Kingdom): As of May 5th, 2025, Romeo McGrowl, one of the stars of the recently reimagined Country Bear Musical Jamboree, began greeting guests in Frontierland, typically near Grizzly Hall. This offers a fresh and novel character interaction.
  • Blizzard Beach Water Park Reopens May 21st: Disney’s Blizzard Beach water park is set to reopen on May 21st, 2025, following its seasonal refurbishment. This means that from May 21st onwards, both Disney water parks (Typhoon Lagoon reopened May 1st) will be operational for the summer season, a first since before 2020. This is excellent news for the final day of your potential travel window.
  • Critical EPCOT Early Closure on May 21st: Please be aware that EPCOT will close significantly early, at 5:30 PM, on Wednesday, May 21st, 2025, for a private event (SAP Sapphire & ASUG Annual Conference). This will heavily impact any evening plans for EPCOT on this specific date.
  • Mama Melrose’s Ristorante Italiano (Hollywood Studios) Final Days: The last day of operation for this table-service restaurant is May 10th, 2025. Guests visiting between May 7th and May 10th have a final opportunity to dine there before its permanent closure, which is part of the area’s transformation for a new Monsters Inc. land.
  • Whispering Canyon Cafe (Disney’s Wilderness Lodge) Refurbishment: This popular, interactive table-service restaurant will be closed for refurbishment from May 12th through May 21st, 2025. This directly impacts dining plans for guests staying at or planning to visit Wilderness Lodge during these dates.
  • CommuniCore Hall (EPCOT) Closure for Transformation: CommuniCore Hall in World Celebration will close from May 12th through May 26th, 2025, to be transformed into the “GoofyCore Play Experience” as part of the “Cool Kid Summer” offerings. During this closure, the Farmers Feast festival booth, typically located there, will have its menu offerings relocated to the Florida Fresh booth.
  • Limited Airport Luggage Transfer Pilot Program: Disney has quietly reintroduced a very limited luggage transfer service to Orlando International Airport (MCO). Currently, this pilot service is only available for guests staying at Disney Value Resort hotels who are flying with Southwest Airlines. While not a return of the full Magical Express service, it’s a small step for a select group of travelers.
  • Florida Resident Summer Magic Ticket Offer: Announced in early May, this special ticket offer for Florida residents is valid for visits from May 18th through September 27th, 2025.

On the Horizon (Context for Future Visits & Evolving Park Experiences):

  • “Cool Kid Summer” Initiatives (Officially Launching May 27th): This new summer program will bring enhanced experiences for families with young children. Expect new kid-friendly zones in Magic Kingdom (Storybook Circus and Tomorrowland featuring Stitch) and EPCOT (Goofy taking over the newly transformed CommuniCore Hall). Characters will also begin appearing earlier during Early Theme Park Entry for resort guests. Additionally, expect pop-up entertainment, games, and enhanced family activities at select resorts (Disney’s Art of Animation Resort, Disney’s Pop Century Resort, Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort, and Disney’s Wilderness Lodge).
  • New Shows Debuting at Hollywood Studios (May 27th, 2025): Two new stage shows are set to premiere: “The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure” (a reimagining of the classic animated film with new sets and visuals) and “Disney Villains: Unfairly Ever After” (an engaging show where villains plead their case).
  • Disney Starlight: Dream the Night Away Parade (Magic Kingdom): This brand-new nighttime parade is scheduled to debut in Summer 2025 (rumored for July). Inspired by the Main Street Electrical Parade, it will feature floats with characters from “Peter Pan,” “Encanto,” “Frozen,” and more, utilizing the latest technology. A change in the “Happily Ever After” fireworks showtime from July 6th hints at a potential parade schedule involving two nightly performances.
  • Test Track 3.0 (EPCOT) Reopening: The reimagined Test Track attraction is anticipated to reopen in Late Summer 2025.
  • Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin Enhancements (Magic Kingdom): This Tomorrowland attraction is scheduled to close for a significant refurbishment in August 2025 (reopening TBD, likely 2026). Enhancements will include new handheld blasters (replacing the vehicle-mounted ones) and the introduction of a new character, “Buddy,” a support-bot.

VOYAGEERS: Finding Hidden Treasures in the Parks

On May 16, 2025, the morning sun will glint off a pocket‑sized bit of sorcery: a burnished brass “Key to Disneyland,” its bow trimmed with a tiny Sleeping Beauty Castle that flickers to life the instant Cast Members set the first lock tumblers twinkling. That single click begins a nine‑land pilgrimage created for the park’s 70th Anniversary, an adventure that invites guests to turn the very pathways of Walt Disney’s original Magic Kingdom into one immersive treasure hunt.

Unlocking the 70‑Year Story, One Land at a Time

Purchased in select shops on Main Street, U.S.A. or at World of Disney, each interactive key remembers its bearer’s progress. Insert it into the whimsical lock plaques—an antique fire‑station door, Aladdin’s golden lamp, a Buzz Lightyear console—and the key glows, chimes and reveals an icon for that land before gently dimming, ready for the next discovery. When all nine stations have been found, a finale lock beside the Disneyland Newsstand pops open a hidden compartment and bestows one of nine surprise trading pins—keepsakes available only through play. The quest can stretch across days, and neither key nor pins are returnable, adding a dash of stakes to the fun.

Walt Disney would have approved of the restless spirit behind the design. “Disneyland will never be completed. It will continue to grow as long as there is imagination left in the world,” he reminded reporters—a promise the new key literalizes with every glowing upgrade it earns.

Echoes of Anniversaries Past

The 70th Key follows a lineage of celebratory flourishes stretching back to the Tencennial of 1965, when Walt introduced the first Disneyland Ambassador to help publicize a year‑long party and personally previewed coming attractions such as Pirates of the Caribbean and the Haunted Mansion. His off‑the‑cuff remarks to Cast Members ended with a playful warning: the first ten years were “just a dress rehearsal.”

Four decades later, the 50th‑Anniversary “Happiest Homecoming on Earth” festooned Sleeping Beauty Castle in gold and painted one ride vehicle on every 1955 opening‑day attraction the same regal hue—a golden Dumbo, a gilded Jungle Cruise launch and more—so families could literally ride inside the birthday décor.

The Diamond Celebration for year 60 followed in 2015, draping the castle in crystal facets and debuting exuberant nighttime spectaculars: Paint the Night’s 1.5 million LEDs glided down Main Street, while Disneyland Forever stitched projection‑mapped stories onto façades from the rooftops to the Rivers of America.

Why a Key, and Why Now?

Keys have always symbolized arrival and possibility, and Disneyland’s newest one invites guests to co‑author the jubilee. The object is part souvenir, part game controller: it stores digital memories yet feels satisfyingly weighty in the palm; it draws visitors to quieter corners—Fantasy Faire’s storybook alcoves, the wilderness wagon outside Galaxy’s Edge—where anniversary décor, live music and surprise character greetings await. Participation is limited to the celebration window (May 16, 2025 – summer 2026), ensuring the hunt itself becomes a time‑capsule memory.

A Turn of the Key, A Turn of the Page

From golden ride vehicles to diamond‑draped castles and now an interactive heirloom that literally lights the way, each milestone has invited guests to be more than spectators. Seventy years after “Black Sunday” crowds first surged through the gates, the Key to Disneyland lets every modern explorer feel a bit like Walt on opening day: pockets full of possibility, impatient to see what magic waits around the next bend—and keenly aware that the story of Disneyland, like the glow at the heart of the key, is still being written.
